GENERAL PURPOSE: 9/2020 Performs manual labor to maintain a clean and orderly work place for all Solid Waste Department indoor and outside work areas. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives direct supervision from the Supervisor Solid Waste Operations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Must be able to receive and follow directions. Assists in the collection of Brush and Bulk routes. Gather and dispose of trash and waste. Maintain the grounds surrounding Solid Waste facilities by operating lawn mowers, trimmers and various small equipment. Repetitive bending, stooping, and lifting to collect solid waste materials from the Transfer Station area and right of ways. Assist in moving heavy objects and in the delivery of refuse containers to Commercial and Residential Customers. Occasionally prepares simple reports and records. Regular and timely attendance is an essential job function. Performs other essential duties as required to achieve successful operations of the department. PERIPHERAL DUTIES: May serve as a member of various employee committees. Other Duties as assigned. REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required. Six (6) months related experience in facility maintenance and/or Solid Waste. Valid State Driver's License or able to obtain one by date of hire. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: None. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Skills to operate equipment effectively and safely; Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work; Ability to service vehicles and equipment; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and safety procedures; Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with fellow employees. Ability to effectively communicate and work with citizens who may have complaints on services provided. The employee must have the ability to work well with others and have a good/pleasant attitude. SELECTION GUIDELINES: Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview, reference check, job related tests may be required, pre-employment drug tests. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Garbage trucks, articulated loader, boom truck, dumpster rig, roll-off truck, forklift, utility trailers, pickup truck, steam cleaning machine, push and riding lawnmowers, hand/power tools, and tire changing equipment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers, various pieces of office equipment, and motor vehicles. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds; prolonged work in tiring or uncomfortable positions; frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and stretching; prolonged standing on hard surfaces; good eye, hand, foot coordination in the manipulation of levers pedals, etc. of motorized vehicles and light equipment. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, Working on high compaction packer with moving parts, diesel exhaust fumes, noise, dirt, chemicals, inclement weather, falling objects, protruding objects, sharp objects, blood borne pathogens, standing on a step of a moving vehicle in heavy traffic, animals at large, working near moving traffic, some work in confined spaces. The work environment is noisy and distracting with multiple areas that need attention to detail.
