Description The R&D Process Engineer functions as the key liaison between MC R&D and plant engineers. As a member of the R&D group, the R&D Process Engineer will be responsible for designing, conducting, and supervising experiments that test new processes or explore improvements of current processes. In this role, the Engineer also provides critical support for the plant in the form of a) detailed process simulations, b) process flow sheets, c) technical expertise in heterogeneous catalysis, and d) process troubleshooting. Commercial plant experience is mandatory along with a demonstrated history of moving projects from lab to plant. A minimum of five (5) years of direct experience with heterogeneous catalysts in a production environment is required. A minimum of five (5) years of hands-on lab experience, preferably in catalyst testing and evaluation, is also required. Hydrogenation and distillation experience are both a plus. Essential Functions / Key Accountabilities Process Design: Two years minimum industrial experience with process modeling with software such as Aspen or ChemCAD is required. Design, test, and optimize processes to be evaluated by R&D Design and modify processes for plant units based on R&D results Cross-department Collaboration: Work with Operations Department/Engineering to develop feasible and economic processes in existing or prospective plant equipment. Create or modify process flow diagrams and flow sheets for plant campaigns. Support plant campaigns with technical expertise, troubleshooting, and process adjustments. Provide accurate and rapid feedback during campaigns. Participate in process review, startup, and improvement meetings. Work with Marketing and Customer Representatives to evaluate the scope of projects and keep stakeholders informed of the progress of R&D studies. R&D Reactor Laboratory: Ensure that tasks in the R&D lab are conducted in safe and timely manner. Coordinate with R&D Director and R&D Group Leader to ensure manpower and equipment resources are scheduled by priority. Research, evaluate, and introduce new equipment for the R&D Reactor Lab as needed to increase lab capabilities. R&D Reactor Team: Supervise R&D Reactor Team (scheduling overtime, vacation, training, etc.) Create work plans for testing in the Reactor Lab. Prepare and edit technical reports to document findings and process improvements. Beside these R&D tasks, he/she further designs, monitors and evaluates reactor process practices in the plant (according to OP-5000 & OP-5001). Education Advanced degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or another engineering degree with focus on catalytic processes Experience / Required Skills At least 5 years of hands-on laboratory experience. At least 5 years of direct experience with heterogeneous catalysts in a production environment. Two or more years industrial experience with process modeling using software such as Aspen or ChemCAD. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate (verbal, written, presentations) with a range of audiences with differing backgrounds and skill levels. Demonstrated experience translating lab-scale work into production, including communication with stakeholders. Solid knowledge of thermodynamics, kinetics, catalytic processes, and thermal separation processes. Experience troubleshooting quickly and effectively, sometimes with minimal information. Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to change. Ability to work in a plant environment and respond quickly to issues that occasionally arise in 24/7 plant operations. Physical Demands Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods of time, up to 12 hours per day. Working from a seated position for up to 12 hours per day. Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms one to two times per day. Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing or crouching on narrow or slippery surfaces. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees. Bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force, exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to move objects forward, downward or outward. Using upper extremities to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion. Raising objects up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds consistently from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm. Possible subject to environmental conditions. Activities could occur inside and outside. Subject to extreme heat. Temperatures above 100 for periods of more than one hour. Subject to vibration. Exposure to movements of the extremities or whole body. Operate/drive utility vehicle. Subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals. Must be able to wear appropriate PPE for tasks as required. FRC uniform, hard hat, safety toe work boots, safety glasses, gloves etc.
