Minister of Youth at Emmanuel Church, INC. Job Description - April 2024 ______________________________________________________________________________ The full time Minister of Youth at Emmanuel Church is the lead minister to persons aged 12-18 at Emmanuel Church. The responsibilities of the spiritual development of persons in this age group naturally involve their parents or caregivers. The Minister of Youth is directly responsible for and charged with Emmanuel ministries of worship, study, discipleship, and service for persons in the middle school and high school years. The Minister of Youth works as a team member of the ministry staff team at Emmanuel Church to provide spiritual leadership, guidance, and growth toward maturity for persons of every age. The Vision of the Minister of Youth Reach – To reach the youth of Abilene and the Dickinson County area with the gospel of Jesus Christ. To develop and offer ministries to attract youth through effective relationships and into Emmanuel Church.Disciple—To be the lead disciple make of Youth at Emmanuel Church.Equip—To equip youth who grow through the student ministries at Emmanuel, so the young person is spiritually ready to face his or her future upon graduation from high school and entry into the work force, higher education, skill training or another transition toward being an adult. Major Areas of Emphasis (Percentages are given to show approximate relationship of time and energy.)35% Weekly preparation for times of youth-oriented worship, relationship building, and learning. Ministering to youth on an every-week basis with developing relationships that result in worship and spiritual formation. It will be essential that the Minister of Youth develop lay volunteers who minister to youth. 20% Youth outreach events. Activities such as camping and retreats, that invite new youth and set the environment for life-transition decisions. The Minister of Youth must develop lay volunteers to engage much of the ministry.20% Youth service events. Planning and experiencing service projects that connect the Christian faith with the Christian life. Often participating in a larger team of people with youth, children, and adults all together. Often working with other ministry staff to form a larger leadership team.10% Specific Relationship Building. The Minister of Youth will emphasize developing relationships with youth in all the areas of emphasis. However, in addition, there will be some time with little structure, but dedicated to building relationships. Some may be with youth who need special care because of their home situation or background.15% Other . It takes time and energy to participate on the ministry staff team at Emmanuel. The Minister of Youth will be included in staff meetings and events, education and leadership training. “Called” Characteristics Absolutely called by God to be a minister of the Christian gospel and committed to working that calling through Emmanuel Church. Youth are usually governed by a school-work-home routine. That means the Minister of Youth must adapt his or her weekly routine to the times when youth are available. It means Saturdays and Sundays are often available for youth ministry. Some weeknights much be spent in youth ministries. School events, such as ballgames become the opportunity for developing relationships. This is a “calling” that asks the person to reconstruct the routines of time to minister (work). Sundays are ministry (work) days through Emmanuel Church. Averaging 3-4 evenings per week at Emmanuel Church building or in a youth event. Loving all youth and expecting the best of each one. Loving so much that you are willing to set and enforce good boundaries and lead your volunteers in the same. Regarding all youth through the “eyes of Jesus.” Personal, family, and public lifestyle must be Biblically consistent with Christian leadership and the social principals of Emmanuel Church (among others, abstaining from tobacco, gambling, and alcohol). Sample Duties and Responsibilities (Others will be added from time to time as the ministry staff team moves into our values, vision, and purpose at Emmanuel Church.) Lead and organize, along with your volunteer team and the leadership of your supervisors, the age-level classes, worship and activities on Sunday morning, Sunday evening and Wednesday after school/evening. Obviously, a team of lay volunteers will be key to teaching, leading and serving in a variety of functions. With the guidance of your supervisor and counsel from the Youth Advisory Council, plan and do a few “big events” for youth throughout the year. These may include retreats, camps, and mission trips. With the guidance of your supervisor, develop a consistent plan to spiritually educate youth from a 6 th grader to a high school senior and then launch after high school. Implement a plan to help the individual learn the basics of the whole Bible, with emphasis upon the New Testament and specifically the Gospels. Use a plan that teaches the basics of Christian Doctrine and highlights the distinctive Wesleyan emphasis. Prepare the graduating student for the freedom he or she will experience upon launching after high school. Do this by laying the solid foundation of the core of Christianity, with brief exposure to the periphery. Reinforce the basics of the body of Christ, so the young person will be prone to stay connected in Christianity when he or she leaves home. Work with the Lead Senior Pastor to have regular times inviting a youth to 1) make a decision for Jesus Christ as Savior & Lord, 2) be baptize, 3) to become a member of Emmanuel Church, 4) to be filled with the Holy Spirit as a second work of grace, and further for some, 5) to make a decision about attending a Christian college, and 6) make a decision about exploring the first steps to prepare for full-time Chrisitan ministry. Other duties and responsibilities of your supervisor and/or the Lead Pastor as a result of our values, vision and direction of ministry emphases at Emmanuel. Qualifications (This list represents some of the requirements for successfully being the Minister of Youth at Emmanuel) Spiritual maturity and commitment to Jesus as a Christian disciple shown by character, attitude, and lifestyle. Commitment to the lifestyle of Christian worship, prayer, and spiritual formation. Relational, team building, organizational, administrative, and leadership skills. Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Competence in forming and nurturing teams, supervising and working with lay volunteers to do most ministries common to youth ministry. Competence in communicating with the parents of youth. The ability to gain the respect of parents and their support for the ministry, as an expert in youth culture and on their side in the partnership of raising Christian youth. Maturity in working with youth wo sometimes desire a “buddy” but really need a mature mentor. Education and Experience (Experience and education should complement each other – these are guidelines.) A degree from a four-year college or university with an emphasis in youth ministry or a related subject. Experience leading the youth of a church with similar emphases like Emmanuel Church. Education in youth counseling or age-level development is desirable. Significant years of experience with conservative, evangelical Christianity in America. Other Skills and Abilities (These are important for matching needs and desires.) Other desirable skills include computer skills, audio/visual skills, team building skills, leadership, and the ability to effectively communicate with and lead a spectrum of people. An ability to connect in relationships with youth, to love youth deeply, to accept a variety of appearances and always point a young person to the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Skill in helping youth integrate into a multi-generational church. Ability to help youth be their age, with all the exuberance and testing, while at the same time being the reliable authority and someone to genuinely look up to. Mature judgement when it comes to setting and enforcing rules for growth and discipline. Ability to manage the budgets of many ministries with the youth department. Emmanuel is a conservative and evangelical church. It ministers to a wide variety of people who have not yet make a commitment to Jesus as Lord and Savior, as well as those who are becoming fully devoted Christian disciples. Each staff person at Emmanuel must love and respect Emmanuel Church.The job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the Minister of Youth. Salary Range Determined based on schooling and experience. Rubric starts at $34,000.
