BASIC FUNCTION:Oversees and manages the operational, fiscal, administrative, and human resource functions of the Pathology Laboratory in the University of Iowa Medical Center Downtown. Ensures the smooth, efficient operations of the laboratory by overseeing the technical and operational functions of the lab, interacting with the Director, Clinical Functions. JOB RELATIONSHIPS:Administrative supervision is received from the Director, Clinical Services, University of Iowa Medical Center Downtown. Functional and technical supervision for laboratory operations is received from the Associate Director, Pathology, and from the Medical Director of the Laboratory. Directly supervises the technical and support staff of the designated laboratory area. Works closely with the Lab Managers in the Emory Warner Laboratories along with other departments & personnel at the Medical Center Downtown, and outside vendor representatives.POSITION SPECIFIC TASK STATEMENTS:1. Provides clinical, technical, and managerial leadership to staff.* Mentors and coaches staff, as appropriate.* Disseminates general information and pertinent policy or procedure changes.2. Maintains productivity and quality of the laboratory operations.3. Demonstrates leadership by aligning, influencing, and inspiring the laboratory team to produce changes needed to cope with the health center's changing environment. 4. Oversees laboratory automation and instrumentation. 5. Develops capital planning requests. Provides related financial background, rationale and other lab specific analytic details to support and provide justification for requests. 6. Oversees and maintains testing capabilities in the designated laboratory to insure that testing throughout is performed in a timely, accurate and effective manner. * Works with Emory Warner Clinical Laboratories to ensure samples are sent/transferred appropriately, including evaluation of courier routes and times.* Ensures that billing for testing, services along with blood and tissue products is accurate and complete.7. Establishes, evaluates, and maintains effective staffing and scheduling systems.* Assists with associated activities in UIHC timekeeping/scheduling system.8. Develops short and long term strategic plans for the laboratory in consultation with medical and departmental leadership. 9. Assesses, develops and maintains regulatory compliance in collaboration with designated staff from the Pathology Quality Management Team. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Some experience working in an academic health center is desired. * Knowledge of laboratory information systems (LIS) is highly desired. * Experience with automated laboratory instrumentation is highly desired. * Experience in a laboratory overseeing or performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology and/or tissue bank is highly desired.
