Core duties include, but are not limited to the following:- Perform outpatient ophthalmology technician health care services required for Government beneficiaries.- Assist ophthalmologist in surgery and perform ophthalmic clinical photography, fluorescence angiography, electrophysiological, and microbiological procedures.- Administer ophthalmic drops and ointments, apply ocular dressings, perform suture removal, and obtain eye cultures.- Perform general ophthalmic procedures in preparing preoperative and postoperative patients.- Take ophthalmic photographs.- Prepare injectable ophthalmic anesthetics and antibiotics.- Assist surgeons in performing surgical and laser procedures in the clinic and operating room as required.- Assist the provider in the examination and treatment of ophthalmology patients, including:- Examine records and forms and prepare patients for the current exam and treatment.- Prepare appropriate equipment and instruments for surgery and follow-up care.- Assist the ophthalmologist by performing technical tests and recording results for procedures for the ophthalmologist's analysis and interpretation.- Assist in refractive/diagnostic procedures to include manual manifest refractions, auto-refractometry, corneal topography, pachymetry, keratometry, ocular photography, and visual fields and pupillary reflex testing and other duties as assigned.- Prepare anesthetics and antibiotics.- Apply ocular dressings.- Conduct vision screening tests, including:- Visual acuity, color vision, tonometry, visual fields, pupil exams, and other technical tests required by the ophthalmologist.- Record data of above tests and determines the need for further evaluation.- Prepare, clean, sterilize, and maintain proper stock of all surgical equipment, instrumentation, and medications. - Prepare procedure room.- Assist the ophthalmologist with clinical procedures and perform as a special assistant, using procedures pertaining to all types of ophthalmologic surgeries.- Prepare patients for and perform general preparation of pre-operative patients. Provide post-operative instructions as directed by the physician.- Assist the provider in contact lens cleaning, dispensing, insertion/removal, and patient instruction. Prepare and fit patients with special optometric devices as instructed by the provider. Instruct patients in correct care, hygiene post-procedurally.- Order and maintain ophthalmologic medications, supplies, and equipment for use by the physician. Perform routine checks of medications and sterile instrument packs for expiration dates.- Maintain and perform required periodic calibration checks on surgical instruments and equipment. Perform user maintenance checks on specialized clinic and surgical equipment. Perform calibration checks on clinical diagnostic equipment and documents such calibration according to specifications listed on equipment.- Maintain all inventory of supplies and orders in a timely manner.- Train and assist other ophthalmic staff as needed.- Perform administrative and clerical duties in support of the Warfighter Eye Center. Maintain a database of laser center patients and candidates. Possess basic computer skills (i.e., typing) and be familiar with common work processing programs. Perform daily clinic functions with guidance from the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC) or Chief of Ophthalmology.- Maintain databases on all patients undergoing refractive surgery, cataract surgery, corneal collagen cross-linking, and other surgical procedures at JBER. This includes data entry, data management, data analysis, quality assurance of data quality, and nomogram analysis as determined necessary by the OIC of the Warfighter Eye Center and Chief of Refractive Surgery. Data includes tracking of all pre-operative, post-operative, and intraoperative data for all patients. Data quality, accuracy, security, and integrity are top priorities of the database. - Arrange and schedule medical appointments and determine patient eligibility for services. Utilize Composite Health Care System (CHCS)/Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application (AHLTA) system tools (detail codes, freezing slots, and TRICARE online usage) to facilitate maintenance of appointment slots, rescheduling options, or cancellation processing.Create appointment schedules and templates in the patient appointment computer system. Perform surgical scheduling for the Warfighter Eye Center. Contact patients to schedule, reschedule, and/or cancel appointments for weekly surgeries. Prepare surgical charts for patients.Organize and contact patients for needed information and review records for completeness, accuracy, and consistency within established guidelines.Enter patient surgical profiles in Preventive Health Assessment and Individual Medical Readiness (PIMR). The contractor shall perform these duties with professionalism and attention to detail, ensuring the highest quality of care for patients and adherence to established guidelines. Work Schedule: Work schedule shall be 0730-1630 Monday-Friday to include a one-hour uncompensated meal break.Minimum Qualifications:The position requires the candidate to have the following qualifications:- Education: The candidate should have a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification.- Experience: The candidate should have a minimum of two years of experience in ophthalmology, including assisting in minor surgeries.The contractor should have two years of previous experience working as a certified ophthalmic assistant (COA) in an ophthalmology clinic that performs refractive surgery, or a refractive surgery clinic that performs the functions mentioned.The Officer in Charge (OIC) may waive this requirement based on the qualifications of the candidate.The candidate should have knowledge of ocular anatomy, ophthalmic medications, visual physiology, optics, use and maintenance of ophthalmic instruments and testing equipment, ophthalmic and medical regulations, medical terminology, optometric technology, asepsis, ocular referrals and emergency medical treatment, patient transportation, medical ethics, medical administration, surgical instruments and equipment, ophthalmic injectable medications, anesthetic solutions, and ocular disorders.- Life Support Certification: The candidate should possess and maintain a current AHA or ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification.- Security: The candidate should have the ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.BENEFITS:- Competitive Compensation & Comprehensive Benefits!- Generous Paid Time Off, Federal Holidays, and More!- Medical/Dental/Vision, Life & Disability Insurance, and Retirement Savings Plan!- Annual CME Stipend and License/Certification Reimbursement!
