The ETS (Education Technology Services) business at Strategic Education, Inc. is seeking a Principal Research Scientist to lead outcomes-based research in collaboration with our institution and corporate partners. In this role, the Principal Research Scientist will play a critical role to design, develop, and execute research documenting the academic and professional outcomes of the various products in our portfolio (primarily, Sophia Learning and WorkForce Edge). This individual will collaborate with partners both within and outside ETS business to refine key outcomes research priorities, identify and refine data and research methods required, and will oversee the analysis and conclusions of the work. This role may present findings at conferences, in relevant publications, or through webinars in collaboration with relevant partners. The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree and extensive years of scientific research experience to qualify for this position, preferably in relevant fields of economic mobility, academic outcomes in higher education, adult learning, career readiness/advancement, adult skill development, etc. We seek an innovative, creative researcher who can successfully thrive in a work environment driving strategic, intellectual leadership, while also being "hands on" with the data collection, analysis, and disseminating results. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Research and Intellectual Leadership: Establish and/or lead a diverse portfolio of research aligned to ETS mission and goals in collaboration with colleagues, partners, and account reps. This program of work must be closely aligned with ETS mission regarding economic mobility, career/skills advancement, and adult learning success. Research agenda will be approved by the CEOs of Sophia Learning and WorkForce Edge. Direct the development and implementation of ongoing research initiatives, aligning research priorities with ETS leadership to advance our research agenda and support positive outcomes for the students and employees we serve. Develop & Maintain Excellent Internal & External (B2B) Relationships Develop and expand long-term relationships with existing and new potential partners for the work. Relationship-building is key to ensure cooperation and facilitation with our institution and corporate partners. Publish results in a variety of outlets, in collaboration with internal and external ETS partners. Effectively communicate the results of key research initiatives in a manner appropriate for the intended audience; ensuring a thorough understanding of applicable results for corporate partners, while communicating more rigorous research-design and statistical results for academic audiences (publications & conferences). Management, Coordination, and Execution of Research Agenda Initiate and steer the design, development, and implementation of research studies; partner with institution and corporate partners to facilitate the data collection, analysis, interpretation, and summary of results. Identify friction points between research initiatives and develop paths to resolution through people, partners, and processes. This research agenda is a new initiative for ETS, so we expect some challenges getting this started; this candidate will need to be a problem-solver that can find creative solutions to challenges that may arise. Ensures prioritized initiatives have project plans to meet timelines, provides appropriate follow-up, and supports coordination for swift execution. Provides research capacity oversight: manages and tracks work streams on key initiatives and projects. Strong business acumen and consulting skills with the ability to effectively communicate up and down management levels. Exceptional written and oral presentation skills. Observational, analytical, and management abilities. Ability to garner consensus across competing agendas and priorities. Customer focused attitude to promote deep relationships with external partners. Problem solver and a strong ability to interpret data and distill the most relevant and insightful points. Ability to thrive in ambiguity driven by rapid growth and evolving business processes as priorities evolve and change. Ability to work autonomously with a strong sense of ownership and a commitment to achieving meaningful results. Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques (prescriptive and descriptive), with an emphasis on using the appropriate methodology in a variety of use-cases. Work Experience: 5+ years of scientific research experience. Research experience in the industry, preferred. Education: From an accredited institution of higher education: Doctorate in a relevant scientific discipline, preferred. Master's degree and equivalent experience, required. Other: Must be able to travel up to 10% of the time. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Typical office setting. Mobility within the office including movement from floor to floor. Travel via plane, car, and metro may be required to perform this job. Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs warrant. Access information using a computer. Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain. Effectively cope with stressful situations. Strong mental acuity. Regular, dependable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job.
